Sarah Newton's Gardening Tips for August

Only now do we think about water conservation; when it is dry weather! Low tech can provide us with a wealth of ideas for how to tackle watering our plants in dry weather. Here's a short checklist;

  • Get a water diverter kit from a DIY store, and hook it up to your water butt
  • Look for 'drought buster' online and in stores - fab low tech pipe system to take your bath water to the great outdoors...
  • There are great idiot proof water timer switches around to plug your sprinklers into. Some have really short and regular programmes to make economical watering from the tap.
  • Look for glass watering balls. They work by releasing water very slowly over several days directly to the roots. Great for pot plants especially.
  • Drinks bottle watering spikes. Simply fir the spike to a drinks bottle, invert into the soil and enjoy slow watering.
  • Ceramic watering cones - similar principal as watering spike and balls - but relying on a porous material.
  • Big drippa greenhouse watering kits. The water is drawn up by the soil as the soil dries out.
  • Use capillary matting or the wet towel in the sink trick for keeping plants watered whilst you are away
  • When planning to plant water hungry beans, previously line the trench below with newspaper and cardboard and kitchen veggie peelings; this will help provide a reservoir of moisture and food!

Ask your local stockists if they can get the items for you if they don't already!  They are real time and energy savers!
